Frequently Asked Questions
  • What is "the RAC"?
Regional Action Councils (RAC) were created by Legislature in 1989 to help our struggling communities to fight the war on drugs. The thirteen regional councils bring key constituency groups together to reduce youth substance abuse, provide training and education, and prevention programming in their respective communities. Recognizing that alcohol and other drug abuse leads to a host of other social problems like violence, teen pregnancy, drunk driving, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS infection and suicide. RACs promote broad based prevention programming.

  • What is SCCRAC?
SCCRAC is a coalition of citizen groups, municipal and nonprofit service organizations working together to reduce substance abuse in our communities. The SCCRAC works to coordinate needed services in the substance abuse field along the continuum of care (I.e. prevention, intervention, recovery and community awareness).

SCCRAC envisions communities where youth and adults are partners in a process of identifying community health problems and creating solutions necessary for a healthy safe environment.

SCCRAC is a nonprofit regional action partnership that

    • Provides technical assistance
    • Maximizes resources
    • Strengthens families
    • Cultivates youth leadership
in order to reduce the prevalence of substance abuse among the population in South Central Connecticut.

SCCRAC encourages broad-based prevention strategies that address substance abuse and related issues through the examination and exploration of alternative approaches.

  • Do RACs provide direct services?
The purpose of the RAC is to develop and coordinate services and not to provide direct services to clients. Direct services care defined as treatment and direct education, prevention, intervention and related support services, such as training. RACs are permitted however, to coordinate such services. RACs may provide community awareness. Community awareness activities include general educational services intended to heighten awareness of the problem, increase the knowledge and skills to address the problem, and educate about alcohol and other drugs.

  • What can SCCRAC do for me?
Plenty! We are your source for all your prevention needs. We are a highly effective community-based partnership with a proven track record of success and programs that are recognized on a national level.
