Additionally, they ensure that all of the equipment and tools are working correctly. This is to ensure that everything is safe to use during operations. Surgical techs also prepare patients for surgery. They often provide the patient with sterile clothing ready for their operation, and they also shave, sterilise, or disinfect the skin on areas where surgery will be performed.

Secondly, the tech may also help the patient complete the necessary forms for their operation. Additionally they may escort the patient to surgery, and help the surgeon to position the patient correctly on the operating table. They then cover the patient with surgical drapes.

Thirdly, they also have an important role to play during the actual operation itself. During surgery, the technologist will aid the surgeon’s and other medical staff in many ways. The tech has to carefully watch and be ready to provide the surgeon with any tools and equipment, which he or she may need. This means that a surgical tech must be familiar with the names of all of the equipment used in surgery. They may have to hold equipment such as sponges and retractors for the surgeon. Additionally they must monitor the patient’s vitals carefully and check charts.

What Qualifications and Training Are Required?

Once you have your associate’s degree, it is best to become certified. Although it is not technically a requirement, a certification makes you look much more professional in the eyes of potential employers. To become a certified surgical technologist you must pass an exam. This exam is open to anyone who has obtained an associates degree in surgical technology, from an accredited college.

Average Surgical Tech Salary

The salary for a surgical tech is typically between $25,000 and $50,000 per year. The average surgical tech salary is around $35,000. The hourly range for a tech is between $13 to $25, but during overtime they can earn between $16 and $38 per hour. Salaries vary vastly depending on things such as, what department you work in, what state you work in, how much of an education you have, and how much experience you have.

A surgical technologist gets paid differently depending on the type of place in which they work. For example they may work in a hospital, an outpatient center, a dentist’s office or a physician’s office.
